Men's Soccer, Georgia Southwestern Battle To 1-1 Draw In PBC Opener

PEMBROKE –
Newcomer Izzy Evans punched in a game-tying score for the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team at the 72:04 mark to even up the contest after Georgia Southwestern knocked in the first goal less than seven minutes prior, but the Braves and 'Canes battled to a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds in the 2015 Peach Belt Conference opener.

The Braves (2-1-1, 0-0-1 PBC) out-paced Georgia Southwestern (0-1-2, 0-0-1) in the first half as the Black and Gold put pressure on the 'Canes side of the pitch in the opening stanza, but GSW answered the pressure with strong defense.

"I thought we played well and we deserved more, but unfortunately a couple of things didn't bounce our way around the box," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "As far as the effort and the response from Wednesday, we couldn't have asked for more from the guys, so I was pleased."

Coming out of halftime with a scoreless game, the 'Canes used a long cross pass from the right side from Charlie Curran for a close range shot by Isaac Avila to put the first score on the board in the 66th minute. However, UNCP used quick passing from Branco Theis into the box to Evans for an open shot past the goalkeeper to tie up the contest.

UNCP logged four shots in the first overtime in attempt to take the win, but was left wanting despite out-shooting Georgia Southwestern 19-12 in the contest. Nathan Legge led the way for UNCP with five shots, while Evans and Tom Potter collected two each.

Sophomore Kenneth Perkinson recorded three saves, while 'Canes' goalkeeper Garrett Blamire posted seven saves in the 110 minutes of action.

GSW's Silvio Polly tallied three shots, while a trio of other notched two. The Braves ended the contest with all 11 corner kicks as seven came in the second half alone.

The Braves will remain at home for a 7 p.m. contest against Erskine (1-3-0) in a regional matchup at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 home contests is free.
