Women's Soccer Blanks Montevallo

MORROW, Ga.Courtney Crump registered a pair of second half goals and the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team used a staunch defensive effort to blank Montevallo, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Clayton State's Laker Field.

The triumph marked the third-straight victory for UNCP (3-3-0, 2-0-0 PBC) who moved to 6-1-1 in the series with the Falcons as well. The setback snapped a two-game unbeaten streak for Montevallo (1-3-2, 0-1-0) who has yet to win a game away from home this season.

"Today was an important win for us," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. Montevallo is a very disciplined team defensively and they are very well coached. I am proud of our team for not losing their composure. It is tough to play a team that is well-organized defensively. We stayed with the game plan and believed in the system. The girls knew that, if they did that, eventually we would break through. I give Montevallo a lot of credit- they will give a lot of teams a lot of problems."

Crump turned in a career-best 12 shots in the effort and keyed a 27-5 shot advantage for the Braves, including an 11-1 disparity in the opening half. Janae Aiken stopped both of Montevallo's shots on goal to tally her ninth career shutout and first of the season.

The squads played at a scoreless deadlock for the first 69 minutes of play, but Crump finally got the Black & Gold off the mark by finding the net at the 69:52 mark. She would add an insurance goal in the 84th minute.

Montevallo registered its only shot of the first half in the 10th minute, but did not register another strike until the 64th minute. The Braves out-shot the Falcons, 16-4, in the second stanza.

UNCP will continue a three-game stretch away from home on September 26 when it heads back to Morrow, Ga., to battle Clayton State (3-2-0, 0-0-0) in a key league contest at Laker Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
