Women's Soccer Tripped Up At Armstrong State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Jenny Allen scored a goal in each half to provide all of the offense, and the Armstrong State defense limited the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team to just five shots as the Pirates snapped a four-game win streak by the Braves with a 2-0 triumph on Wednesday afternoon at the Armstrong Soccer Field.

The setback marked the first loss for the Braves (4-4-0, 3-1-0 PBC) in more than three weeks, and just the third time in eight games that the Black & Gold has allowed more than one goal. Armstrong State (5-2-1, 2-0-1) has now won nine-straight games in the series with UNCP.

Courtney Crump registered three of UNCP's five shots in the contest to lead the offensive effort for the visitors. Janae Aiken tallied eight saves to highlight the defensive prowess for the Braves.

"I hope we learned a very valuable lesson today. We were out-played and out-worked by a very talented Armstrong State team today. This is the Peach Belt Conference and, if you want to be a contender in this league, then you have to show up to play every game. I think that we were running around still thinking about the Clayton State (win on Saturday). At this level, you just simply can't be content. You have to put the last game behind you and move on to the next game.

"Our effort out there today simply wasn't acceptable and wasn't good enough. I am disappointed, but we will put this behind us. We have shown that we are capable of winning a lot of games, and we will regroup and get ready for Flagler on Saturday."

Allen gave the Pirates the lead for good when she collected a deflection in the 9th minute and snuck a shot past Aiken. The Braves were able to log just one shot on goal in the first 43 minutes of play, but did not tally a shot on target (on goal) until the 81st minute. Allen capped the scoring effort for the hosts on a header at the 55:37 mark.

The Braves will open up a four-game home stand on Saturday when they suit up to battle Flagler (3-1-1, 1-1-0) in the front half of a 5 p.m. women's and men's soccer doubleheader at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2015 UNCP home soccer matches is free.
