PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team racked up five wins in the first period alone, including four victories via pin, and produced 18 takedowns and six near falls on the way to a 50-0 shutout victory over visiting St. Andrews on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
It was the second shutout win of the season for the Braves (10-3) who have now won five-straight dual meets and eight of their last nine outings dating back to mid-November. St. Andrews (4-8) fell to 0-10 all-time in the series with the Black & Gold.
The Braves led 18-0 after just four matches thanks to decision victories by both Josh Brown (125 pounds) and Jake Smith (141), as well as forfeit wins for the hosts at both 133 and 149 pounds. Eric Milks turned in the first bonus-point victory of the night via a first-period (2:48) pin at 157 pounds to signal a dominating run for UNCP through the remainder of the matchup.
Joe Remaklus needed just 56 seconds to pin SAU's Kavoris Perry at 165 pounds, while fifth-ranked Blaze Shade made his victory look effortless en route to a 16-1 technical fall in the ensuing bout. Mikey Thomas pushed the team lead out to 38-0 with a 7-2 decision over Argie Burnette in the 184-pound bout, and the Black & Gold finished off the night with first-period pins by Brach Walker (2:40) and Stuart Nadeau (1:19) at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.
UNCP will be back in action again, Jan. 29-30, when it heads back to Hartsville, S.C., for the Coker-hosted Super Region 2 duals inside the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center. The Braves are scheduled to battle Shorter, Indianapolis, Emmanuel and Findlay at the event.
