Georgia Southwestern Scurries Past Women's Basketball

PEMBROKE – Visiting Georgia Southwestern used a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter to storm ahead for good as the Lady Hurricanes snapped the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team's four-game home win streak with a 63-59 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The setback was just the second home loss of the season for UNCP (8-9, 3-7 PBC) who shot just 33.8 percent in the outing. The triumph snapped a three-game losing streak for Georgia Southwestern (8-9, 2-8) who had dropped eight of its last nine contests heading into the weekend.

Jasmine Huntley scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting to pace the Black & Gold, while Jonissa Monley added 10 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to cash in on her fifth-straight double-double outing. Avery Locklear tallied 13 points for the hosts as well.

Aleah Holden scored 14 points and notched a dozen rebounds to pace a very balanced offense for the Lady Hurricanes who got at least two points from nine different players in the victory. The visitors grabbed assists on 18 of their 23 buckets in the contest as well.

Georgia Southwestern came up empty on its first seven field goal attempts in the third quarter to fall behind 31-27, but the Lady Hurricanes kept pace with the Braves over the next three minutes before Yvonna Dunkley's 3-pointer at the 4:57 mark in the period gave the visitors the lead for good. UNCP trimmed an eight-point fourth quarter deficit back to just two, 61-59, on Huntley's layup with 16 seconds left, but the visitors canned a pair of free throws late to hold off the late rally.

The Braves led by eight, 20-12, in the opening minute of the second quarter, and again with just more than five minutes left before the intermission, but the Lady Hurricanes had pulled to within one point, 26-25, on a layup with 44 seconds left in the second quarter. UNCP would eventually take a 29-27 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Braves will close out a short two-game homestand on Wednesday when they lace up to take on PBC East-leading Augusta (14-5, 7-3) in the front end of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
