HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team staked claim to a comfortable 19-11 lead after a victory by Mikey Thomas at 184 pounds, but 13th-ranked Tiffin picked up an injury default victory at 197 pounds and a tight 5-4 decision in the heavyweight matchup to escape the Braves, 20-19, on Friday evening at the Super Region 2 Duals.
The setback snapped a five-match win streak for the Braves (10-4) who will wrestle three more dual matches at the annual premier event on Saturday in Hartsville, S.C. It was the second win of the day for the Dragons (6-5) who posted a 27-12 win over Limestone earlier on Friday.
Tiffin offset a forfeit loss in the 125-pound match with bonus-point victories in each of the next two individual bouts to grab an 8-6 advantage, but the team lead changed hands after each of the next three matches. Fifth-ranked Blaze Shade tallied a dominant 12-4 decision at 174 pounds to give the Black & Gold a 16-11 lead and Thomas's 8-2 decision minutes later would pad that advantage out to eight points.
Fifth-ranked Jake Cramer picked up six key team points for the Dragons after winning by injury default at 197 pounds, but second-ranked Garrett Grey secured the team win for Tiffin with a tight 5-4 decision over Stuart Nadeau in the final individual matchup of the night.
