BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Fifth-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) registered five bonus-point wins en route to a 34-9 win over the UNC Pembroke wrestling team in the morning dual, but the Braves rebounded with a 26-9 win over the host Pioneers to forge a split at the LIU Post Tri-Meet on Sunday inside the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Black & Gold (6-3) has now won four out of its last five dual matches in the midst of a more than two month stretch away from home. It was the first dual meet action of the season for the nationally-ranked Falcons (1-0), while LIU Post (5-8) has now dropped three-straight dual meets after going 4-2 in the month of December.
Notre Dame won each of the first six individual matches in the morning session, including four bonus point victories, to build a 26-0 lead, but all-American Blaze Shade got the Braves on the board with a 6-4 decision over Anthony Daley at 174 pounds. Top-ranked and two-time national champion Joey Davis tallied the final bonus point win of the day for Notre Dame in the 184 pound matchup and fourth-ranked Garrett Lineberger stretched the team lead out to 34-3 with a decision moments later at 197 pounds, but Stuart Nadeau turned in a third-period (5:22) pin of Almonte Patrick in the heavyweight bout to provide the final.
Josh Brown got the afternoon match started out right with a 16-9 decision over LIU Post's Tyler Walsh in the 125-pound matchup, but the Pioneers won two-straight bouts, including a pin at 133 pounds, to storm ahead 9-3 on the team scoreboard. That would be all the Pioneers could muster for the remainder of the matchup, however, as the Braves took the final seven individual matches, including major decisions by both Eric Milks (149 pounds) and Shade.
The Braves will be back in action again on Friday when they head to Hartsville, S.C., to take part in the Coker Duals. The Black & Gold is scheduled to face Mount St. Joseph's in their opening dual meet of the event on Friday morning, before taking on King in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) contest later that afternoon.
