HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Senior Stuart Nadeau tacked up his team-leading eighth and ninth pins of the season, but the UNC Pembroke wrestling team dropped a trio of dual meets on Saturday on the final day of the Super Region 2 Duals inside Coker's Harris E. and Louise H. DeLoach Center.
UNCP fell to 14th-ranked Findlay by a 27-12 score in Saturday's opener, before getting on the wrong end of a 28-12 outcome against Kutztown. The Black & Gold would finish out the day with a 30-13 loss to Ashland. Saturday's setbacks, coupled with Friday's heartbreaking 20-19 loss to No. 13 Tiffin, stretched UNCP's (10-7) skid out to four-straight matches.
UNCP took an early lead on nationally-ranked Findlay thanks to a 7-5 decision by Josh Brown in the 125-pound matchup, but the Oilers reeled off six-straight wins to take a 21-3 lead on the team scoreboard. Mikey Thomas stopped the bleeding with a close 4-3 win at 184 pounds, but Dalton Ishmal put Findlay's final points on the board moments later via a first-period (1:48) pin at 197 pounds. Nadeau needed just 91 seconds to register his eighth pin of the season in the final individual bout of the contest.
Kutztown got on the board first in the second match of the day via a 76-second pin at 125 pounds, but Dustin Smith knotted things back up for the Braves with a late-third period (6:57) pin at 133 pounds. The Golden Bears strung together four-straight wins to grab a comfortable 19-6 win after the 165-pound match, and then won three of the final four individual matches to provide the final.
Brown would, again, help UNCP light up the scoreboard first with a tight 3-2 win over Ashland's Dan Morell in the opening matchup of the nightcap, but Ashland responded with five-straight victories to grab a 20-3 lead on the team scoreboard. All-American Blaze Shade tacked up his second win of the day with a dominant 16-3 major decision at 174 pounds, but the Eagles posted bonus-point triumphs at 184 and 197 pounds to clinch the team victory. Nadeau would register his second pin of the day, however, in the heavyweight matchup, using just 18 seconds off of the third-period clock to topple Nigel Cross.
