HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team tacked up big wins over Greensboro and Southeastern, while also improving to 2-0 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) action with a comeback victory over King, to highlight action at the Coker Duals on Friday afternoon in the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center.
UNCP (9-3) has now posted victories in seven of its last eight dual meets.
UNCP recorded five pins and took advantage of a trio of forfeits to post its second shutout of the season against Greensboro (4-9), 55-0. Josh Brown got things going with a 13-7 decision over Gabriel Wilson in the 125-pound bout, but the Black & Gold got pins from Ryan Blackwell (141 pounds), Eric Milks (149), Blaze Shade (174), Mikey Thomas (184) and Stuart Nadeau (285) to fuel the onslaught. Dustin Smith (133), Hayden Fry (157) and Brach Walker (197) all tallied victories via forfeit.
Southeastern (9-7) picked up wins in three of the first five individual bouts of their afternoon session with the Braves to build a 15-6 lead at the halfway point of the dual, but the Brave stormed back to win the remaining five matches on the way to the 34-15 team victory. A major decision by Joe Remaklus at 165 pounds, coupled with Shade's first-period pin at 174 pounds, gave the Braves the lead for good. Walker and Nadeau closed out the dual with forfeit triumphs.
King (1-2) raced out to an early lead by capturing four of the first five individual matchups, but the Braves sliced through the remaining five matches of the dual to claim a 24-17 victory. Landon Reed gave the Tornados a commanding 14-5 advantage with a 7-3 decision at 157 pounds, but a decision by Remaklus got the Black & Gold within striking distance and Shade's late third-period (6:44) knotted the team score back up. Thomas nabbed a forfeit victory at 184 pounds to give UNCP the lead for good.
The Braves will return home for the first time in more than two months on Friday evening when they suit up to battle U.S. 74 rival St. Andrews (3-7) at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court as part of the "War On I-74 Rivalry" series. Wrestling action is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
