Men’s Soccer Falls To North Georgia In Double Overtime Heartbreaker

PEMBROKE – A 68th minute goal by Izzy Evans helped the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team build a commanding 4-1 lead, but visiting North Georgia scored three times in the final 13 minutes of regulation and then shocked the Braves in double overtime on Saturday morning at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

The setback spoiled the last hurrah for three UNCP (4-8-0, 2-4-0 PBC) seniors who were playing their last collegiate home game against the Hawks in Pembroke. It was the third victory in the last four outings for North Georgia (9-8-0, 6-2-0) who remained in the mix for a share of the 2016 league title with the result.

Jordan Walshaw and Izzy Evans both netted a pair of goals for the hosts, while senior Branco Theis logged a career-best three assists in the loss. Lucas Gusmao surrendered all five goals between the pipes for the Black & Gold, but also collected a career-high 15 saves in the effort as well.

The NightHawks, who out-shot the Braves 31-18, including an 8-0 disparity in the second overtime period, got two goals from Matt Shaftoe as well as lone goals from three other players. Netminder Conner Domaleski finished his outing with five saves, but allowed all four UNCP goals as well.

The teams went into the break locked in a 1-1 stalemate, but Evans and Walshaw scored goals 46 seconds apart early in the second period to give the hosts a 3-1 edge, before the 68th-minute strike by Evans made it a 4-1 game. Michael Akin brought the visitors to within a pair of goals on a 78th minute laser, Evan Davis struck just less than four minutes later and North Georgia evened the game back up on Eren Ozer's goal in the 84th minute.

The squads traded a handful of quality strikes in the first extra period, but neither was able to find the back of the net. The NightHawks threw a barrel of shots at UNCP in the second overtime period, but it was not until the 107:10 mark that Shaftoe put a foot on a crossing pass from Akin and redirected it past Gusmao for the Golden Goal.

The Braves will open up a regular season-ending three game road trip on Monday when they head to St. Augustine, Fla., to battle league nemesis Flagler (4-6-1, 4-2-0) at Saints Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
