PEMBROKE – Just two days removed from 110 minutes of action Saturday afternoon, the UNC Pembroke women's soccer squad went the distance with Armstrong State in a battle of Peach Belt Conference (PBC) unbeatens Monday night at Lumbee River EMC Stadium, tying the Pirates 1-1.
The Braves (9-2-2, 7-0-2 PBC) have yet to lose since the season's second contest on Sept. 7, while the Pirates (12-1-2, 8-0-2 PBC) run their unbeaten streak to 14 after dropping the season's first game.
The Black & Gold sit third in the league standings, but have played one less game than the two teams at the top. Armstrong State now holds a 12-0-3 record over UNCP in series history.
The guests opened the scoring in the 25th-minute when Asa Thorsen took a through ball in the rights side of the box and banged home her third goal of the season.
Determined not to trail at halftime, the Braves put the pressure on the Pirate defense late in the opening period, racking up four shots and three corner kicks in the time after the Armstrong State goal. The constant pressure came to fruition in the 40th minute when sophomore
Stacey Scott intercepted an attempted clear and fired from 18 yards out to knot the game at one apiece. It's her team-leading fifth goal of the season and the Jacksonville native has now scored in three of the last four games.
The Pirates were on the attack for much of the second half, firing 12 shots to UNCP's six. But Black & Gold freshman goalkeeper
Gina Ryan was up to the challenge, making four of her six saves in the second period.
In the overtime periods, each team attempted five shots with one on goal. The best chance for either side came in the 95th-minute when a Pirate headed hit off the crossbar before being cleared by the UNCP defense.
Scott paced the Braves with four shots, while redshirt-junior
Courtney Crump racked up three shots in 86 minutes off the bench. Juniors
Kate Weisner and Jasmine Senecal-Guzman, as well as freshman
Katy Ryan, each fired a pair of shots.
The Braves, in the midst of a 16-day, eight game stretch, play the sixth of those eight games Wednesday at USC Aiken. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Pacer Pit in Aiken, South Carolina. The Pacers (4-12, 2-8 PBC) are losers of three straight and are 0-6 at home this season. UNCP has never lost to USC Aiken, holding a 12-0-3 series advantage.
