YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – With the clock ticking under a minute to play in double overtime Sunday afternoon at YHC Soccer Field, UNC Pembroke redshirt-freshman
Carly Rochelle chipped a final desperation shot toward goal that inched over the Young Harris goalkeeper and into the net to send the Braves to a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) win over the Mountain Lions in the league finale for both squads.
The victory wraps up the regular season for the Braves (11-3-2, 9-1-2 PBC), who played into double overtime in three of their final five contests in a span of nine days. UNCP clinches the No. 2-seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will host Clayton State Wednesday evening at Lumbee River EMC Stadium in the quarterfinals. The Mountain Lions (9-3-3, 8-3-1) snag the No. 5-seed in the league tourney and will travel to Armstrong State Wednesday.
"I am incredibly proud of the women today," head coach
Lars Andersson said following the match. "We just finished up playing our eighth game in sixteen days so to win a game like this against a very good Young Harris team is something special."
The hosts were in control for what seemed like the entire match, even playing down a woman after a Mountain Lion was shown a red card in the 24th-minute. Young Harris outshot the Braves 26-15, and put 14 shots-on-goal to UNCP's eight. The Mountain Lions attempted 10 corner kicks, while the Black & Gold put their foot on just two.
"I want to top my cap to the Young Harris squad," Andersson said. "Coach Lessa has done an amazing job reviving that program and they gave us everything we could handle today."
In a heated match that saw four yellow cards and a red card, the Braves used only 12 different players to fend off the Young Harris onslaught. In the 110th and final minute, UNCP took control of a Mountain Lion throw in and pushed the ball forward to Rochelle who stopped just short of the 18-yard box and finessed the game-winner with just 40 seconds remaining in the match, her fifth goal of the season.
"To score a goal with forty seconds left proves that we never quit on the game," Andersson said. "This team is not satisfied with ties and they keep looking for ways to win a game. Today showed the heart and character of our squad."
The match very easily could have gone Young Harris' way if not for UNCP freshman keeper
Gina Ryan. The Cape Carteret, North Carolina native made a season-high 14 saves, including four in the second period of overtime. Ryan made several leaping saves to push the ball just over the crossbar in her seventh shutout of the season. She ends the regular season with the best save percentage in the league, a .903 mark.
"Gina was incredible in goal and our back four were very solid throughout the game," Andersson said. "Our midfielders worked their tails off and our forwards ran at everything. It really was a total team effort."
Junior
Kate Weisner paced the visiting squad with four shots, while sophomore
Stacey Scott fired three of her own. Rochelle, sophomore
Christine Rolfes and redshirt-freshman
Kristina Stevenson each attempted a pair of shots.
"We didn't have much left in the tank today so thank goodness we get two days off to prepare for the conference tournament," Andersson said.
Wednesday's quarterfinal will be the second meeting in Pembroke between the Braves and Clayton State this season. The Black & Gold got the best of the Lakers 3-0 on Sept. 21. Rochelle scored twice and Stevenson accounted for the other tally in a contest that saw the Braves put 12 shots on goal to Clayton State's six.
