Jasmine Huntley's first-career double-double to erase the deficit and edge Fayetteville State 71-64 Thursday evening at Felton J. Capel Arena.
The Braves (2-0) open the season with a pair of wins for just the second time in the last six years and run their series advantage to 20-10 over the Broncos (0-3), including the last two meetings.
Fayetteville State led for the majority of a game that saw eight lead changes and seven ties, holding an advantage for over 22 minutes. The Black & Gold took the lead for good on a
Jonissa Monley free throw with 4:44 remaining in the game, while the Broncos converted just one of their final seven shots in the last two minutes. The hosts cut the deficit to two at 62-60 with 2:14 to play, but the Braves scored the next five points to put the game away.
Huntley dished out a career-high 10 assists and paired that with 10 points, including three free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game. She tacked on five steals and four rebounds. Monley paced the Braves with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench, the 24th time she has poured in double-digit points in her career. Junior
Ebone Stevens knocked down four from long range for a squad that hit 6-of-15 from deep.
Three Broncos put up at least 10 points, led by Tajah Clark with 15. Fayetteville State shot 30-percent from the field (20-of-66), while the guests rattled in shots at a 37-percent clip (23-of-62). UNCP used the extra pass to perfection, racking up 18 assists on 23 field goals.
After building their advantage to 10 with under three minutes to go in the opening period, the Broncos missed seven-consecutive shots, allowing the Black & Gold to trim the deficit to one before the hosts took a four-point lead into halftime. The Braves outscored Fayetteville State by 11 points in the final 20 minutes.
UNCP will take a short break form regular-season action to take on UNC Greensboro in an exhibition contest Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Fleming Gym in Greensboro. The Spartans (3-0) are 5-2 all-time against the Braves, including three straight in the series. The teams have not met since the 1991-92 season.
