PEMBROKE – Visiting Wingate grabbed a season-high 58 rebounds and used a 20-8 advantage in the third quarter to dispose of the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad 65-52 Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The setback is the first of the season for the Braves (2-1), who took 17 fewer shots than the guests. The Bulldogs (3-1) have now won three straight overall and four-consecutive contests over the Black & Gold.

Sophomore Avery Locklear paced the home side with a season-high 13 points, while newcomer Nyla Allen added nine points to the effort and grabbed four boards. Senior LaShonda Prichard hauled in a team-high five rebounds and tacked on seven points.

Marta Miscenko canned a game-best 18 points and snagged 14 rebounds for Wingate, recording her fourth-straight double-double. Danasia Witherspoon knocked down 6-of-12 from the floor to provide 15 points, while Caroline Averette chipped in 12.

Up just 36-32 with under six minutes to play in the third period, the Bulldogs buried six of their next seven shots to extend the lead to 50-37 and took a 52-40 advantage into the final period. UNCP got as close as seven twice in the fourth quarter, but the guests hit three of their last four shots from the field to put a lid on the victory.

After opening up a 29-21 lead two minutes into the second quarter, Wingate missed 15 of 16 shots in the final eight minutes to allow the Braves to knot the game at 32-32 heading into the locker rooms.

The guests won the rebounding battle 58-31 and attempted 73 shots to UNCP's 57. Wingate cashed in 36 percent of their shots, while the Braves sank 33 percent from the field. The Bulldogs went to the charity stripe 15 times and converted on 10, while the hosts were 5-of-7 from the line.

The Braves wrap up a short two-game home stand Wednesday when St. Augustine's comes to Pembroke for a 5:30 p.m. tip. The Falcons (2-5) are losers of two straight and will be playing their eighth-consecutive game away from home to begin the 2016 campaign. The sides have met just two times, once in 1979-80 and again in 1995-96, splitting the two meetings.
