MOUNT OLIVE – Senior
Jasmine Huntley put together her second double-double of the season, but the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team was unable to keep host Mount Olive off the charity stripe in a 62-56 setback Wednesday evening at Kornegay Arena.
It's just the second loss of the season for the Braves (4-2), who fall to the Trojans (7-2) for just the fourth time in the 28-game series history. The Black & Gold still boast a 13-2 advantage in the Division II era of the series.
The Braves used a 9-0 run from the waning seconds of the third quarter and into the fourth to turn a 41-37 deficit into a 46-41 lead, including five from Huntley. The shifty guard finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, the fourth time in six games she has poured in double-digit points. Huntley added five assists and a pair of steals.
After the Trojans pulled within two at 46-44 with over seven minutes to play in the game, neither side led by more than three until Felicity Havens knocked down a 3-pointer to put Mount Olive up by five at the 2:05 mark.
Avery Locklear responded at the other end with a deep ball of her own with 1:22 on the clock, but the hosts hit on all four of their free throws in the final 23 seconds to secure the victory.
Mount Olive attempted 20 free throws to UNCP's two and the Trojans were called for 10 fouls, while the Braves heard the whistle 19 times not in their favor.
Locklear canned a game-best 16 points, just two shy of her career high.
Airico Williams added eight points, while
LaShonda Prichard tacked on five.
Nyla Allen hauled in nine boards and
Jonissa Monley came down with six.
The Braves jumped out to an early lead, grabbing an 11-2 advantage with 2:06 on the clock in the opening period. Mount Olive closed the gap to six at the end of one on a 3-pointer that sparked a 9-2 run to pull within two at 15-13. The Trojans banked in a shot with 11 seconds to go in the half to knot the game at 22 going into the break.
UNCP will lift the lid on Peach Belt Conference play Saturday when No. 20 Clayton State comes to Pembroke for a 1:30 p.m. tip at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Pacers (8-1) are winners of five straight this season and hold a 16-8 advantage in the series over the Braves, including a 78-60 win last year in Morrow, Georgia.
