Women's Basketball Falls To Flagler On Senior Day

PEMBROKE – Aided by a 63 percent shooting mark in the second half, Flagler raced past the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad Wednesday night at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court, 83-65.

The Braves fall to 9-15, 4-13 PBC with the setback and have now lost four of the last five to the Saints. Flagler improves to 12-12, 8-9 PBC and snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.

After falling behind 6-0 in the opening minutes of the game, UNCP put together a 13-4 run to end the first period with a 13-10 advantage.

Flagler opened the second quarter much like the first, going on a 14-0 run in under four minutes to take a 24-13 lead. The Braves hung tough for the remainder of the half and trailed 39-29 at the break.

Both squads put up 19 points in the third quarter, before the Saints pulled away in the final period, outscoring the Braves 25-17 in the final 10 minutes.

UNCP shot 46 percent (23-for-50) from the floor over the 40 minutes, but were outdone by Flagler's 52 percent (30-for-58) clip. The Saints made 48 percent (13-for-27) of their 3-point attempts, including an impressive 57 percent (8-for-14) in the final 20 minutes. The Black & Gold were on the wrong end of a slim rebounding margin, bringing down 29 boards to Flagler's 30.

Jonissa Monley poured in a team-high 16 points, her 21st-career game in double figures. She added five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Joining Monley in double-digit scoring were Avery Locklear, Airico Williams and senior Mary Robinson. Locklear was 6-of-11 from the floor and came down with four boards and swiped two steals. Williams rattled in a career-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Robinson went for 12 points in her last home game at UNCP and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. She pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and dished out two assists.

Fellow seniors Crystal Hicks, Rachel Temple and Chandrica Fuller all saw playing time in their final home contests. Hicks was 1-for-1 from long range for 3 points.

Junior Jasmine Huntley scored six points to surpass the 500-point mark in her career.

The Braves hit the road Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. contest at Armstrong State. The Pirates left Pembroke as 60-48 winners last Saturday.
