Big Sixth Inning Pushes Baseball Past Shippensburg In Opener

PEMBROKE – Shippensburg took its first lead of the game on a Dalton Hoiles RBI double in the top of the sixth, but the UNC Pembroke baseball team sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine times in the bottom of the frame on the way to a 10-6 victory over the Raiders in the front half of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Drew Beaver doubled and scored twice on a 2-for-4 day at the plate for the Braves (8-3) who turned four double plays in the outing and snapped a three-game skid with the result as well. Roberto Rivera singled and scored twice on a 2-for-3 hitting line, while Nolan Pierce drove in a pair of runs and scored once on a 2-for-4 showing.

Ryan McMillen registered a trio of singles on four trips to the plate for the Raiders (3-4), while Grant Hoover (2-for-3) and Austin Allison (2-for-4) both turned in multi-hit days as well.

Jesse Stinnett (2-0) allowed just two runs on eight hits in seven strong innings from the hill to pick up the win for the hosts. Mark Curtis (1-2) was tagged with the loss for Shippensburg after surrendering five earned runs on five hits and three walks in 5-1/3 innings of work. He also struck out four.

UNCP grabbed a first-inning lead thanks to a one-out sacrifice fly from Justin Dattilo, but Shippensburg knotted the score back up in the top of the second on a two-out RBI single from Tyler Betz. Curtis was near-flawless from the second through the fifth innings, but UNCP climbed all over the right-hander in the sixth. That frame was fueled by six hits, three walks and a pair of errors by the visitors.
