Baseball Rallies, But Comes Up Just Short At Barton

WILSON – Barton scored seven runs on as many hits in a game-changing second inning, but needed a late defensive stand to hold off the UNC Pembroke baseball team, 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.

The setback snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves (10-4) who had ventured away from home for the first time this season on Tuesday. It was the second-straight win for the Bulldogs (11-2) who stopped a five-game series skid with the result as well.

Justin Dattilo doubled twice and scored four times on a 4-for-6 outing to pace the visitors, who also got multi-hit showings from four other players as well. Andrew Webster scored twice on a 2-for-3 hitting line for Barton, while Jacob Willis (1-for-5) homered for the first time this season.

Starter Justin White (1-1) allowed five runs on five hits in just 1-1/3 innings of work to take the loss for the Black & Gold. Justin Evans (3-0) grabbed the victory for Barton despite surrendering four earned runs on five hits in a brief relief appearance for the hosts. Troy Maslowski worked the final four outs of the game to notch his fourth save of the campaign.

Barton plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-4 advantage, but the Braves clawed their way back into the contest by scoring two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. UNCP got something going again with three-straight singles with one out in the eighth, but could only push across one run on C.J. White's sac fly to left field.

Maslowski came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and got Nick Salisbury on an inning-ending grounder to first base, and then retired the side in order in the top of the ninth.

UNCP will be back in action at home again this weekend when the Braves bunker down to host a weekend series with Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler (6-7, 2-4 PBC) at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the series with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday.
