PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team plated a trio of runs in each of the first and fourth innings to help support a sensational outing by righthander Jesse Stinnett as the Braves registered a 7-2 victory over Flagler in the series opener on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
Robert Rivera (3-for-4) singled three times and scored twice to fuel a 13-hit attack for the Braves (11-4, 2-2 PBC) who improved to 9-1 all-time against the Saints in Pembroke. Nick Debo hit his second home run of the season to highlight a 2-for-4 night at the plate, while Justin Dattilo and Nick Salisbury turned in 2-for-4 showings as well.
Cole Ondrejka drove in a run on a 2-for-4 hitting line for the Saints (7-8, 2-5), while Kolin McMillen scored a pair of runs for the visitors as well.
Stinnett (3-0) racked up 125 pitches on the night, but limited Flagler to just four hits and three walks in 7-1/3 innings, while also striking out seven. Daniel Batts and Kyle Ramsey also turned in quality late-inning relief outings. Reigning PBC Pitcher of the Year Mike O'Reilly (3-2) was tagged with the loss for Flagler after surrendering six runs (five earned) and 10 hits in five innings from the hill. He also struck out eight.
The Braves opened up the contest with three-straight singles, and then lit up the scoreboard first thanks to a catcher's interference call that brought Rivera trotting home from first. Christian Snider's two-run single a pair of batters later gave the hosts a 3-0 edge heading to the second.
Flagler cut into its deficit via a costly fielding error by UNCP in the top of the fourth, but Debo pushed the advantage out to 6-1 in the bottom of the frame when he crushed a two-strike offering from O'Reilly over the wall in the right field.
The teams would trade single runs in the eighth to cap the scoring on the night.
The teams will resume their series with a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. Righthander Lane Johnson (1-1, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Black & Gold, and he will likely counter Flagler righty Dustin Dye (1-2, 2.89).
