PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team registered season highs in both hits and runs scored and nearly tilted the right field scoreboard on the way to a 20-5 victory over visiting Chowan on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
It was the most runs for the Braves (19-8) since a 20-5 home win over Coker last season, while the hit total (24) marked the most safeties in a game for the club since tallying 25 in that same rout of the Cobras. The hosts also crushed five home runs for just the second time (Lander; April 17, 2015) in the last seven seasons.
The setback snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hawks (10-16) who have now lost 13-straight games in the series with the Black & Gold.
The Braves got base hits from 12 different players on the night, including Hayden Buffkin who doubled twice and scored once on a 4-for-6 hitting line. Seven other players registered multi-hit showings. Drew Beaver clubbed his fourth home run of the season and drove in four runs on a 2-for-5 night at the plate.
Connor Arcobasso hit a home run and scored twice on a 2-for-4, 3-RBI night for the Hawks.
Starter Matt Fuhr (2-1) picked up the win in a pre-determined pitching rotation for the Black & Gold after striking out six and surrendering five hits and a pair of runs (one earned) in three innings of work. Chance Pauley, Chris Stewart and Tyler Holt all turned in a scoreless inning of relief as well.
Matt Kaplan (0-3) allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits and a pair of walks to saddle the loss for the visitors. He also struck out three.
Chowan cut into a 10-2 deficit on Arcobasso's 3-run homer in the fourth, but that would signal the end of the offense on the night for the Hawks. Nolan Pierce hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame before the Braves scored four more times in the fifth to put the game in out of hand status.
UNCP, which scored three runs in each of the first three innings of the contest, tacked up six runs in the seventh to provide the final.
The Braves will close out their rare multi-day midweek series with Chowan on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sammy Cox Field.
