Baseball Powers Past Coker To Snap Skid

PEMBROKENolan Pierce and Nick Salisbury hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the fourth to give the UNC Pembroke baseball team the lead for good as the Braves rallied back from a pair of early-inning deficits to topple Coker, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The result snapped a two-game losing streak for the Braves (13-6) who wrapped up a five-game homestand with the victory as well. The setback stopped a two-game win streak for the Cobras (15-6) who have now dropped four-straight games in the series with the Black & Gold as well.

Nick Debo highlighted a 3-for-4 day at the plate with his third home run of the season, while Hayden Buffkin drove in a pair of runs on a 3-for-4 outing as well. Salisbury doubled and scored twice on a 2-for-5 hitting line.

Thomas Lopez doubled in a pair of runs on a 3-for-4 day at the plate for Coker. Three other Cobras registered multi-hit outings as well.

Trace Hagler (1-0) struck out one and allowed four hits and a pair of unearned runs over two innings of relief to grab the win for the hosts, while weekend starter Jesse Stinnett notched his first save in a UNCP uniform by striking out two in a hitless ninth. Ryan Milner (1-2) was tagged with the loss for the visitors after surrendering four earned runs on eight hits over four innings from the hill.

Fielding miscues proved to be deadly for the Braves early as Coker took a 1-0 lead in the first, and then plated a pair of unearned runs in the third to grab a 3-1 advantage. Debo would get the power display started with a one-out solo homer in the third, before Pierce and Salisbury powered the Braves out in front for good in the fourth.

UNCP would add a pair of late insurance thanks to a two-run single by Hayden Buffkin with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Braves will step back into Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when they trek to Dahlonega, Ga., for a three-game set with North Georgia (11-7, 4-5 PBC) at Bob Stein Stadium.
