PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team sent 10 batters to the plate in a 7-run first inning to grab the early momentum, but visiting Barton scored at least one run in each of the first eight innings on the way to a 12-9 win over the Braves on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The result marked the fourth-straight home loss for the Black & Gold (24-15) who registered its 28th double-digit hit attack of the season in the setback. It was the first time since 2008 that Barton (27-14) has taken both regular season meetings with the Braves.
UNCP got multi-hit showings from four different players on the night, including Roberto Rivera who walked and singled in a pair of runs to highlight a 2-for-4 hitting line. Justin Dattilo doubled and scored twice on a 2-for-4 plate performance as well.
Calvin Hawke cashed in on three doubles and scored a pair of runs to earmark a 4-for-6 outing, while Gatlin Pate hit his first two home runs of the season and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 showing. Andrew Webster (4-for-6, 3 RBI) tallied four hits in the outing as well.
Hank Simpson (0-2) surrendered three earned runs on a trio of hits in just 1-1/3 innings of relief to saddle the loss for the hosts. Blake Helms (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the visitors after striking out three and scattering three hits in five quality innings from the mound.
Barton cut into a 7-1 deficit with two scores in the top of the second inning, but plated lone scores in each of the next four innings before tying the game up on Pate's solo homer in the seventh. The Bulldogs erupted for four runs in the eighth to put the game away.
UNCP will step back into Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when they pack up their show and head to Greenwood, S.C., to take on 10th-ranked Lander (32-11, 19-8 PBC) in a weekend set at Dolny Stadium. The squads will open up the three-game series with a 5 p.m. contest on Friday.
