No. 10 Lander Too Much For Baseball In Series Opener

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Tenth-ranked Lander scored nine runs on as many hits in the first two innings to take control early and then hit cruise control the rest of the way out on the way to a 10-5 victory over the UNC Pembroke baseball team in the series opener on Friday evening at Dolny Stadium.

The setback marked the seventh loss in the last eight outings for the Braves (24-16, 10-12 PBC) who still managed to register eight or more hits for the 35th time this season. The Bearcats (33-11, 20-8) improved to 17-6 at home in 2016, and have now won five of their last seven contests overall.

Stibel Aleman Saba scored twice on a 2-for-5 outing for the Black & Gold, while Drew Beaver and Nick Debo each hit two-run home runs to highlight 1-for-4 hitting lines. Christian Snider went 0-for-3 to snap his career-long streak of reaching base safely at 24 games.

Zach Daly and Colby Lusignan both homered twice on 2-for-5 showings for the hosts.

Jesse Stinnett (5-3) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven extra-base hits and exited the game after just one inning of work to take the loss for the Braves. Will Jones (6-2) yielded five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 7-2/3 innings from the hill, but still picked up the win for the Bearcats. Chris Stewart turned in a career-long appearance for the Braves - striking out four while surrendering just one earned run in six innings of relief - but was not awarded a decision.

Daly and Lusignan highlighted a three-run first inning for the Bearcats with back-to-back solo homers, but Lander erupted for six more runs in the second, including back-to-back-to-back home runs by Matt White, Daly and Lusignan. Debo helped the Braves cut into a 9-0 deficit with a two-run bomb in the fourth, but Lander got a run back in the bottom of the frame via an ill-timed error by the Black & Gold, as well as a RBI single by John Mangum.

Beaver crushed a two-run home run in the sixth to chip away at UNCP's deficit even more, but the visitors mustered just one more run the rest of the way thanks to a costly error by the hosts in the top of the seventh.

The squads will continue the three-game set on Saturday in Greenwood. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
