Five-Run Eighth Pushes No. 10 Lander Past Baseball

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Stibel Aleman Saba's two-run single in the top of the eighth inning gave the UNC Pembroke baseball team a late three-run lead, but 10th-ranked Lander scored five times in the bottom of the frame on the way to a series-clinching 14-12 victory over the Braves on Saturday evening at Dolny Stadium.

It was the 1,000th game of head coach Paul O'Neil's storied 20-year coaching career. O'Neil sports a 593-406-1 overall record during that time, including a 509-328-1 mark in 16 seasons as skipper of the Black & Gold.

Roberto Rivera walked and scored twice on a 3-for-4 night for the Braves (24-17, 10-13 PBC) who have now dropped seven of their last eight league contests. Hayden Buffkin drove in a pair of runs and crossed the plate two times on a 3-for-5 hitting line. Three other players tallied multi-hit games as well to fuel a 17-hit attack for the visitors.

Kyle Ramsey (0-3) allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and a trio of walks in two innings of relief to take the loss for UNCP. Andrew Reardon (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Bearcats despite surrendering four hits, two walks and three earned runs in 2-1/3 innings from the hill. Brandon White recorded the game's final three outs to notch his ninth save of the season.

Matt White (3-for-6, 3 R) and Thomas Berry (3-for-4) both turned in three hits for the Bearcats (34-11, 21-8) who snapped a four-game series skid with Friday's 10-5 win and improved to 24-26 in the series with Saturday's result.

Lander plated five runs in the bottom of the second to stake claim to an early 7-2 advantage, but UNCP scored twice in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and then stormed ahead with three runs in the top of the sixth. The Bearcats knotted the score up on Matt White's RBI knock in the bottom of the frame, but the Braves plated three runs in the eighth to back out in front again.

Alex Conaway (2-for-4) led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer, and Lander eventually tied the game back up on consecutive RBI singles by Matt White and Zach Daly. Two bases-loaded walks later in the frame would provide the final.

The Braves and Bearcats will close out the three-game series on Sunday in Greenwood. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
