Coker Strikes Early, Holds On To Beat Baseball

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jack Leech's one-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning gave home-standing Coker an early 8-1 lead, and the Cobras dodged a late-inning rally to upend the UNC Pembroke baseball team, 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Tom J. New Field.

Nick Salisbury drove in a run and scored once on a 4-for-5 outing to pace the Braves (24-19), who also got three hits apiece from both Justin Dattilo (3-for-4, 2B) and Hayden Buffkin (3-for-3, 2 R). Will Winslow doubled and homered on a perfect 4-for-4 outing for Coker (27-17), while Leech drove in four runs to highlight a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Jamie Cyr (0-1) yielded five runs (four earned) on seven hits in two innings of work to take the loss for the Braves. Reliever J.T. Writner (1-0) recorded the final out in the fifth to pick up the gift win for the hosts, while Kenny Barry registered the game's final two outs to notch his first save of the season.

UNCP cut into an 8-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the fifth, and then made it a one-run game after a sac fly by Roberto Rivera (2-for-4, 2 R) in the sixth. The Cobras responded plated another run via a sac fly by Leech in the bottom of the frame, and then pushed the advantage out to 11-7 with two more scores in the eighth.

The Braves put runners on the corners with just one out in the ninth, and whittled away at their deficit thanks to a two-run single by Stibel Aleman Saba moments later that chased reliever Ben Brown from the mound, but Barry retired two of the three batters he faced to slam the door on the rally.

UNCP will close out the home portion of its 2016 regular season schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta (27-14, 16-8 PBC) at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the weekend set with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday.
