Eighth-Inning Rally Pushes Baseball To Series Win Over Augusta

PEMBROKE – Visiting Augusta pounded out four hits and scored four times to grab a comfortable 6-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to key a series-clinching 8-6 comeback win over the Jaguars on Saturday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (26-19, 12-14 PBC) got two hits apiece from three different players in the triumph, including Christian Snider (2-for-4) who sparked the late rally with a RBI double. Roberto Rivera walked and singled twice to key a 2-for-4 showing as well, while Nick Salisbury doubled and walked twice on a 1-for-3 hitting line.

Cole Thompson walked and scored twice on a perfect 4-for-4 plate performance for Augusta (28-16, 16-10) who has now dropped five-straight league outings since sweeping then-No. 5 USC Aiken two weeks ago.

Trace Hagler (2-1) struck out three and surrendered three hits over 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Black & Gold, while Justin Pegram worked a scoreless ninth on the way to tallying his second save of the campaign. Closer Frank Warren (0-1) saddled the loss for the visitors after yielding three earned runs on as many hits in the eighth.

Augusta scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take its first lead of the series, but the Braves answered with two scores of their own in the bottom of the frame to take the momentum back.

UNCP cut into a 6-3 deficit on Salisbury's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, but the Braves would go quietly in both the sixth and seventh innings. The hosts got key RBI doubles in the eighth from both Snider and Justin Dattilo to knot the score back up, and then finished off the rally with RBI hits from Nolan Pierce and Rivera.

The Black & Gold will close out its series with Augusta on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Sammy Cox Field. The Braves will honor their seven-member senior class prior to start time.
