Stinnett, Baseball Grab Series Opener With Augusta

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Braves staved off a ninth-inning rally to snap a five-game skid with a 4-3 win over visiting Augusta in the front half of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Roberto Rivera drove in a pair of runs on a 3-for-4 outing for UNCP (25-19, 11-14 PBC), while Justin Dattilo doubled and scored once on a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Drew Beaver and Hayden Buffkin both turned in 2-for-4 outings for the hosts as well.

Jamal Cummings doubled and scored twice on a 3-for-4 hitting line to pace the Jaguars (28-15, 16-9) who got lone base hits from four other players as well.

Jesse Stinnett (6-3) struck out eight and yielded just five hits and a pair of runs (one earned) over eight strong innings from the mound to pick up his first win in more than a month, while Kyle Ramsey worked the game's final three outs to notch his second save of the season.

Tristan Jones (7-3) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and a pair of walks in 5-1/3 innings of work to take the loss for the Jaguars. He also struck out three.

Stinnett faced four or less batters in each of the first four innings before Augusta utilized a pair of ill-timed errors to scratch the game-tying run across in the top of the fifth. A three-run sixth inning would give the lead back to the Madison Heights, Va., native who would eventually pitch into the ninth.

Run-scoring knocks by both Tyler Roberts and Hunter Boose in the top of the final frame brought the Jaguars to within a single score with a runner on first and one out, but Ramsey induced a game-ending groundout up the first base line to seal the win.
