PEMBROKE – Visiting and sixth-ranked USC Aiken shook off a seventh-inning deficit by sending 10 batters to the plate in a four-run eighth inning and the Pacers completed a weekend sweep of the UNC Pembroke baseball team with a 10-7 win over the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
Five players registered multi-hit days for the Braves (23-12, 9-9 PBC) who became just the eighth team this season to out-hit the Peach Belt Conference's top offense. Stibel Aleman Saba drove in a run and scored twice on a 3-for-5 hitting line to lead the way, while Christian Snider (3-for-4) walked and singled three times as well. Nick Debo doubled to highlight a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Tyler Ammerman doubled, homered and scored three times on a 2-for-5 hitting line for the Pacers (29-6, 19-5) who have now won 13 of their last 14 contests. Chaz Pal doubled and drove in two runs on a 3-for-5 outing for the visitors as well.
Kyle Ramsey (0-2) inherited an 7-6 lead to start the eighth, but saddled the loss for the Black & Gold after surrendering four earned runs on three hits. Reliever Nick Jobst (5-1) scattered four hits over 2-2/3 scoreless innings to grab the win for the Pacers. He also struck out a pair.
USC Aiken strung together four hits and scored five times in the top of the third to grab the early lead, but the Braves answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to get back into the contest. Ammerman hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth and extend the visitors' advantage out to a pair of runs, but the Braves got a sac fly from Justin Dattilo in the sixth, and then stormed ahead with two more scores in the seventh, including a go-ahead RBI single by Snider.
Mitchell Price and Nile Goings both singled to lead off the eighth for USC Aiken, and a clutch sac hit from David Lankster moved both runners into position. Ammerman's fielder's choice RBI knock plated Price with the game-tying run, and the Pacers went in front for good on a RBI groundout from leadoff hitter Skylar Mercado moments later.
UNCP will hit the road again this weekend when it makes the short trip south to do battle with PBC rival Francis Marion (19-15, 7-10) in a three-game series at Sparrow Stadium. The clubs will open up the weekend with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday.
