Chowan Uses Late Goal To Stymie Men’s Soccer

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's soccer team used a 51st-minute strike by Jordan Walshaw to negate a halftime deficit, but visiting Chowan went ahead for good on Terell Williamson's score in the 80th minute on the way to a 2-1 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

The setback marked the first home loss of the season for UNCP (3-3-0) who had its seven-game series win streak snapped as well. It was the first series win for Chowan (4-3-1).

Walshaw tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign, but freshman Marco Garcia posted a game-best four shots, including two strikes on target. Newcomer Lucas Gusmao played all 90 minutes in goal for the hosts, but did not come away with a save.

Williamson and Ben Chapman both grabbed goals for the visitors, while netminder Carlos Ramirez tacked up four saves in the winning cause.

Chapman got the Hawks off the mark with just more than two minutes left in the opening half, but Walshaw evened the score back up nearly six minutes into the second stanza. A back-and-forth affair for the next 30 minutes of play, Williamson added the game's final score despite a diving effort by Gusmao.

The Braves will close out a season-long four-game home stand on Wednesday when they lace up to battle Catawba (3-3-0) in a 7 p.m. matchup at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. Admission to all 2016 UNCP soccer home games is free.
