Men’s Soccer Battles, But Falls To Catawba At Home

PEMBROKE – Visiting Catawba punched in a pair of first half goals to lug a comfortable advantage into the break, but the Indians needed to fight off a determined second half rally by the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team to secure a 3-1 win over the Braves on Wednesday evening at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

The setback marked the second-straight loss for UNCP (3-4-0) who closed out a season-long four-game home stand with the regional tilt. It was the second-straight victory for the Indians (4-3-0) who snapped a two-game road losing streak in the process as well.

Walshaw netted his Peach Belt Conference-leading seventh goal of the season and matched a team-high with two shots in the outing. Ruben Taks also mustered a pair of shots, both of them on target. Lucas Gusmao turned in three saves between the pipes for the Black & Gold.

German import Tim Frederik-Lange netted a pair of goals and tacked up an assist as well for the Indians, while Jack Pettett came off the bench to add a third score for the visitors. Joe Gonzalez tallied three saves in goal for Catawba.

Frederik-Lange helped his team take the lead for good in the 15th minute when he found space and chipped a shot over a charging Gusmao for the early advantage. Pettett would give the Indians a 2-0 cushion heading into the break with his 37th minute strike.

Walshaw's direct kick from 20 yards out in the 50th minute found nothing but the back of the net to help the Braves trim their deficit in half. Frederik-Lange capped the scoring on the night with another chip shot over Gusmao in the 88th minute.

UNCP heads to Americus, Ga., on Saturday to battle PBC foe Georgia Southwestern (1-6-1, 0-2-0 PBC) in the back half of an 11 a.m. doubleheader at the GSW Soccer Field.
