Lincoln Memorial Slips By Men’s Soccer In Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Lincoln Memorial netted a pair of second half goals, and then held back a late rally attempt by the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team, on the way to a 2-1 triumph over the Braves on Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ga.

Jordan Walshaw scored the lone goal for UNCP (0-1-0), while also logging two of the Black & Gold's three shots in the contest. Trenton Spigener tacked up three saves in his first collegiate start between the pipes. Freshman Lucas Gusmao worked a scoreless second half in goal and registered one save.

Ronaldo de Jesus and Victor Peres each scored a goal for the Railsplitters (1-0-0) who posted a 19-3 shot disparity in the outing, including an 11-2 advantage in the second stanza. August Ahlin turned in one save for LMU in goal.

Peres got Lincoln Memorial off the mark in the 59th minute when he took a through pass from Danilo da Silva inside the penalty area and fired a shot past Spigener. De Jesus made it a 2-0 game in the 74th minute off of an assist from Henrique Rezek.

Walshaw would get the Braves back into the contest nearly six minutes later, however, when he took a service from Josh Hanratty and chipped a shot over Ahlin. The Railsplitters would hold the Braves without a shot over the last 10 minutes, however.

The Braves will be back in action again on Thursday when they open the home portion of their 2016 slate by battling Brevard in a 6 p.m. contest at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2016 UNCP soccer home games is free.
