SWEET BRIAR, Va. – A program-record win streak was extended to nine on Saturday by the UNC Pembroke swimming squad, as the Braves knocked off host Sweet Briar 158-65 before squeaking by Pfeiffer 117-112 at the Prothro Natatorium in Sweet Briar.
The Black & Gold won six of the 14 events, four individual and two relays, and grabbed runner-up honors 10 times.
Senior Sonayliz Goveo logged a pair of victories on Saturday, both in the 200-meter freestyle (2:34.08) and the 50-meter freestyle (31.09), to pick up nine points in each event for the Braves. The Hope Mills, North Carolina native finished second in the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 3:02.27.
Abigail Wood won her team-best eighth win of the season in the 100-meter back stroke, as the freshman bested the field by over 17 seconds. Wood also picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-meter backstroke (2:44.81) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:15.83) and was less than four second out of first in each race.
Megan Hunter won the longest event of the day, the 800-meter freestyle, by over a minute, as the freshman touched in 10:24.65 and second place finished in 11:38.03. Hunter hauled in a runner-up finish in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:15.83.
Freshman Selena Rodriguez claimed victory in the 200-meter breaststroke and bested the field by over nine seconds with a time of 3:12.92. The Ronkonkoma, New York native also touched second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:25.20, which was less than three seconds out of first.
Karina Ramosbarbosa notched a pair of runner-up efforts in the 50-meter freestyle (32.86) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:12.67), while senior
Alexys Pagan trailed just her teammate Wood in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:29.75.
Junior
Kelsey Williams was less than two seconds off the pace in a runner-up effort in the 200-meter freestyle (2:36.04) and touched third in the 400-meter freestyle in 5:31.32. Victoria Brousseau registered a trio of third-place finishes on Saturday in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:25.83), the 100-meter freestyle (1:14.07) and the 200-meter breaststroke (3:23.51).
The UNCP foursome of Hunter, Brousseau, Ramosbarbosa and Williams capped off the day with a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay (4:46.60), while Goveo, Rodriguez, Wood and Williams finished second in the day's first event, the 400-meter medley relay (5:15.25).
Saturday's action concluded the fall portion of the UNCP schedule, as the Braves will take two months off before returning to the pool on Jan. 13 at Converse.
