Women’s Basketball Suffers Road Setback To Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY – Senior Nyla Allen matched a career high with 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, but host Lenoir-Rhyne used a 50-percent shooting mark in the second half to pull away from the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team and send the Braves home with a 67-51 setback.

FIRST QUARTER
-A low-scoring first quarter was tied 5-5 halfway through the period before Lenoir-Rhyne took its largest lead of the stanza at 12-6 with 2:53 to play.
-The Braves went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter, including an Allen long ball at the buzzer, to take a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes of action.

SECOND QUARTER
-Neither side led by more than three points until the Bears went on an 11-2 run in a span of just over three minutes to stretch their advantage to eight at 29-21.
-Alecia Hardy rattled in a 3-pointer with 23 ticks on the clock to cut the deficit to five (29-24) as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

THIRD QUARTER
-Lenoir-Rhyne scored 11 of the first 16 points in the third quarter to grab a 40-29 lead with under five minutes showing on the clock.
-UNCP responded with an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to three, but the hosts poured in 11 of the final 14 points in the period to stretch the lead back to 11 at 51-40.

FOURTH QUARTER
-The Bears kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the fourth and didn't let the Black & Gold get any closer than 11 before pulling away late.

NOTABLES
-Allen's 20 points matched her career high that she previously set last season on Feb. 15 against Armstrong State. She added eight rebounds and a pair of steals.
-Hardy chipped in eight points and five rebounds, while Kasey Drayton and Aliyah Farmer each tacked on five points.
-The Braves shot a season-low 25.8 percent from the field, including a 22.9-percent clip in the second half.
-Lenoir-Rhyne's 51 points allowed are its lowest of the season, as the Bears won their third-straight game after starting the season 4-4.
-The Bears had five players that scored in double digits, led by a double-double from leading-scorer Madi Suddreth(13 points, 14 rebounds).

UP NEXT
The Braves will play their first home game in exactly a month when Peach Belt Conference foe Columbus State invades Pembroke next Sunday. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court on the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader. The Cougars (3-2, 1-0 PBC) haven't played since a Dec. 2 victory over then-No. 22 Lander.
