Columbus State Races Past Women’s Basketball In PBC Home Opener

PEMBROKE – Three Columbus State Cougars eclipsed the 20-point mark and the guests outscored the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team 28-11 in the third quarter to fuel a 99-79 Columbus State victory on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER
-The Braves scored the first five points of the afternoon on a pair of baskets from Alicia Hardy, but Columbus State bounced back with six-straight points to take a 6-5 lead at the 8-minute mark.
-A high-scoring first quarter saw a combined 18 shots made, including five 3-pointers for each side, and an Aliyah Farmer jumper with 26 seconds left sent the teams to the break tied at 25.

SECOND QUARTER
-After a UNCP basket that put the hosts up two, the Cougars rattled off a 15-6 run over the next eight minutes to grab a 42-33 lead.
-Ebone Stevens buried one of her three 3-pointers at the 1:46 mark to trim the deficit to six and a pair of Tee Graham freebies brought the Braves within four before a Cougar free throw with two seconds left sent the guests to the locker room with a 43-38 lead.

THIRD QUARTER
-Columbus State scored the first 10 points out of the break to build its lead to 15, but UNCP answered with a 7-0 run to pull within eight with under seven minutes on the clock.
-The Cougars effectively put away the game with an 18-4 run to end the quarter to lead by 22 (71-49) with 10 minutes to play.

FOURTH QUARTER
-The Braves put up a game-best 30 points in the final frame, but Columbus State poured in 28 to keep a commanding deficit throughout and didn't let the hosts inch closer than 15.

NOTABLES
-Columbus State connected on 13-of-15 shots from the 8:44 mark of the third to the 6:27 mark of the fourth in which the lead was stretched from seven to 26.
-The Cougars turned the ball over a season-high 31 times, which led to 31 UNCP points on the other end.
-The Braves were outrebounded 49-28, including a 29-14 deficit on the defensive end, while Columbus State held a slim 14-10 edge in second-chance points.
-The guests shot a season-best 52  (32-for-62) from the floor and 60-percent (15-for-25) from behind the arc, while the Black & Gold connected at a 40-percent (28-for-70) clip overall and 33-percent (10-for-30) from deep.
-Columbus State's shooting performance was its best in over 15 years and its 15 made long balls came just two from the PBC record of 17.
-UNCP's 70 total shots are a season high and its 30 attempted 3-pointers match a season standard that was set against Mount Olive.
-Five Braves chipped in double-digit scoring efforts, led by 13 from junior Avery Locklear on 4-for-8 shooting. Hardy added 11 and Graham, Melanie Horne and Nyla Allen each tacked on an even 10.
-Tatiana Wayne paced the Cougars with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Machala Raymonville poured in 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including a game-high six 3-pointers. Tatum Jarvis added 20 points in the win.

UP NEXT
The Braves wrap a short, two-game home stand on Tuesday when Georgia Southwestern treks to Pembroke for PBC action. Tipoff is slated for noon on the back end of a men's-women's doubleheader on Education Day at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Hurricanes (4-2, 1-1 PBC) dropped a 73-57 affair to Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon. GSW won the only meeting between the sides last season in a 66-55 game in Americus.
