Women’s Basketball Outmuscles Georgia Southwestern In First League Win

PEMBROKE – Senior Nyla Allen poured in a career-high 22 points and grabbed a game-best 13 boards in her fifth-career double-double and the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team logged a 53-35 advantage on the glass to spark a 71-60 win atop visiting Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday afternoon in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER
-The Braves jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first 91 seconds to force an early Georgia Southwestern timeout thanks to an Avery Locklear layup and a pair of buckets by Allen.
-With UNCP up eight with under seven minutes to play, the Hurricanes used a 6-0 run to trim the score to 10-8 and eventually took a 16-15 lead on a long ball with 1:31 on the clock.
-UNCP scored the final four points of the quarter on a pair of layups to lead 19-16 at the end of the first period.

SECOND QUARTER
-The Black & Gold run was stretched to 14-0 in the first 3:24 of the second quarter to hand the hosts a 29-16 lead thanks in part to a 4-for-18 shooting effort in the second stanza by the Hurricanes.
-Georgia Southwestern was able to pull within nine before the second-quarter buzzer and the Braves hauled a 35-26 lead into the locker rooms.

THIRD QUARTER
-The UNCP lead was trimmed to seven at the 7:01 mark on a Kya Cochran 3-pointer before the Braves rattled off an 11-2 run to see the lead swell to a game-high 16 on a pair of Jillian Ebron freebies with 1:03 on the clock.

FOURTH QUARTER
-Georgia Southwestern once again closed the gap to seven in the final frame, this time with 23 ticks on the clock, but Alicia Hardy and Tee Graham iced the game at the free-throw line for the Black & Gold with a trio of freebies in the final 20 seconds.

NOTABLES
-With the victory, the Braves snapped a four-game losing streak to Georgia Southwestern that dated back to January of 2014. UNCP improves to 6-1 against the Hurricanes in Pembroke.
-Allen's 22 points eclipsed her previous career high of 20, which she most recently accomplished on Dec. 10 of this season against Lenoir-Rhyne. Tuesday marked her third-career 20-point game and the fifth time she's hauled in at least 10 rebounds.
-Graham chipped in 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Ebone Stevens and Melanie Horne each tacked on seven points. Horne also grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.
-The Braves led for 38:18 of the possible 40 minutes and led by as many as 16 late in the third quarter.
-UNCP shot 42 percent (27-for-65) from the field and limited the Hurricanes to just 32-percent (20-for-62) shooting. The Black & Gold's 60 points allowed is a season low.
-The Braves grabbed a season-best 53 rebounds and held a 53-35 advantage on the glass, including a 30-18 edge on the defensive end.
-Shanya Jones paced the guests with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Cochran added 10 points in the losing effort.

UP NEXT
The Braves will enjoy 10 days off before hitting the road for a two-game road trip beginning Saturday, Dec. 30 in Dahlonega, Georgia against the Nighthawks of North Georgia. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. on the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader at Memorial Hall. The Nighthawks (7-2, 2-1 PBC) have won four of their last five overall and were slotted eighth in the most recent D2SIDA Southeast Region poll. UNCP leads the all-time series 9-8 over North Georgia and has won the most recent two meetings, including a 79-66 triumph last season in Pembroke.
