PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team put up offensive numbers not seen in more than a decade as the Braves tasted victory for the fifth time in their last six outings with a 26-3 rout of visiting Barton on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
UNCP (21-10) scored multiple runs in seven different frames in the outing and produced its most runs since a 28-2 triumph at St. Augustine's on March 13, 2007. The 26 hits put up by the hosts was the most for the ball club since tacking up 26 safeties on the way to a 22-3 win over Chowan on April 25, 2006.
The setback snapped a three-game win streak for the Bulldogs (21-13) who rolled into the matchup fresh off a road series sweep of Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel over the weekend.
Five different players recorded three or more hits for the Black & Gold, including freshman
Ethan Baucom who doubled and homered on a perfect 5-for-5 night at the plate.
Roberto Rivera registered a 4-for-7 hitting line, while
Jarratt Mobley (3-for-7),
Luke Jackson (3-for-5) and
Nick Salisbury (3-for-5) turned in three hits apiece.
Ricks Dearing doubled and drove in two runs on a 2-for-4 performance to lead the Bulldogs.
Jesse Stinnett (4-3) won for the second time in as many starts after striking out five and scattering four hits and a trio of earned runs across five solid innings from the hill for the Braves. Andrew Davis (2-3) took the loss for the visitors after surrendering seven runs (five earned) on six hits and a trio of walks in just 2-1/3 innings of work.
The Braves scored three runs in the bottom of the first to set the tone early and, after a scoreless second inning, continued to pour gas on the fire. The hosts led 14-3 at the midway point, but scored at least two runs in each of the remaining innings to provide the final.
UNCP will step back into Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when it makes the long trek to Americus, Ga., for a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern (12-17, 5-7 PBC).
