PEMBROKE – A pair of complete games from senior
Abbey Walters and freshman
Malerie Leviner propelled the UNC Pembroke softball squad to a sweep of USC Aiken 11-3 and 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) openers for both sides Saturday afternoon at LRA Field.
The Braves (17-4, 2-0 PBC) have now lifted the lid on league play with a sweep for the second-straight season and run their current winning streak to 10, which is the longest winning streak since 14 in a row in the 2008 campaign. The setbacks snap a four-game winning streak for the Pacers (9-5-1, 0-2 PBC), who mustered just seven hits in the doubleheader.
USC Aiken put the Black & Gold in an early hole in game one, as the Pacers scored three runs on four hits in their first at-bat. Not fazed by the deficit, UNCP responded with a run in the second and used six runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to wrap up its ninth run-rule victory of the young season.
In the latter half of the fourth, junior
Ashleigh Mason ripped a double to left center that plated
Kaitlynn Norton who had previously tripled. After a Pacer error extended the frame, Walters took advantage and deposited her seventh home run of the season over the left field fence. The three-run bomb gave the Braves' a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Freshman
Alex Watkins hit her second home run of the season two batters later, a two-run shot to center to extend the lead to 7-3. Four more runs on four hits, capped off by a
Taylor Gerhart RBI single, put the icing on the 11-3 triumph.
In the circle, Walters (9-1) tossed her sixth complete game of the season and struck out a trio of Pacers. She went 3-for-4 at the dish with four RBIs and two runs scored. Gerhart, Watkins, Mason and
Haleigh Epperson each added two hits and six Braves stole one base each to tie a season high. Eight of the nine UNCP offensive starters had at least one hit.
In a much-lower scoring game two, Leviner (5-3) stole the show in the circle by going the distance for the second time in her career and striking out a career-high seven batters. Leviner surrendered just two hits (one each in the first and seventh) and lowered her season ERA to 2.32.
UNCP grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when
Lexie Coxe singled home Watkins and the Braves tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on Norton's RBI single to right center.
Five different Braves accounted for the team's five base knocks, which were all singles.
The Braves return to LRA Field for more PBC action Sunday when Lander makes the trip to Pembroke for a 1 p.m. twinbill. The Bearcats (7-13, 0-2 PBC) were swept by Francis Marion Saturday and have lost five straight overall. Last season, UNCP swept the doubleheader in Greenwood, South Carolina by 5-2 and 8-6 scores.
