SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong State used a two-out rally to score five runs in the bottom of the second to provide right-hander Matt Meeks with more than enough run support as the Pirates staved off a weekend sweep with a 6-3 victory over the 21
st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Sunday.
The setback closed the door on the regular season for the Braves (37-13, 15-9 PBC) who matched the 2015 squad for the second-most regular season victories in school history. The Black & Gold finished the regular season in a tie for 4
th place in the Peach Belt Conference standings – the second-best finish for the club in program history.
The victory signaled the end of the program for Armstrong State (23-25, 6-18) who notified its coaches, student-athletes and staff in early March that it would not compete in athletics during the 2017-18 athletic season ahead of ASU's merger with Georgia Southern University.
Luke Jackson singled twice and scored once on a 2-for-4 outing for the visitors, while
Stibel Aleman Saba hit a pinch-hit two-run single with two outs in the ninth. Chandley Corley singled in a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 showing for the Pirates, while Mike Warren drew four walks and scored twice on a 1-for-1 day at the plate.
Jesse Stinnett (5-4) struck out three in 5-2/3 innings from the hill, but surrendered six earned runs on eight hits and a quartet of walks to take the loss for the Black & Gold. Matt Meeks (4-4) came within an out of tallying just the second complete game of the campaign for Armstrong State, but got the win anyway after limiting the Braves to just nine hits and three earned runs in 8-2/3 innings of work. He also struck out five.
UNCP scratched the scoreboard first on
Ethan Baucom's two-out RBI single in the first. Armstrong State loaded the bases with its first three at-bats in the second, but Stinnett looked to gain back control by retiring each of the next two Pirates. However, consecutive walks opened the door to five runs for the hosts and that proved to be the difference in the outcome.
The fifth-seeded Braves will face fourth-seeded Columbus State (29-19) in the opening round of the 2017 PBC Baseball Tournament on May 10 at Francis Marion's Sparrow Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
