MURFREESBORO –
Megan Hunter and
Selena Rodriguez each claimed an individual victory on Saturday and the UNC Pembroke swimming team touched first in the 200-meter freestyle, but host Chowan won eight of the 11 events to key a 98-76 victory over the Braves at the Bynum Brown Aquatic Center in Murfreesboro.
In the day's second event, Hunter blew past the field by 17 seconds to win the 800-meter freestyle in 10:20.11 to claim nine points for the Black & Gold.
After seven-straight event wins by Chowan, Rodriguez grabbed another nine points for the Braves with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:30.89, while teammate
Victoria Brousseau touched second in 1:35.74.
UNCP capped off the day with a victory in the 200-meter freestyle, as the team of
Taylor Lusk, Rodriguez,
Alexys Pagan and
Karina Ramosbarbosa used a time of 2:22.59 to grab 11 points for the Black & Gold.
Hunter finished second in the 200-meter freestyle, while
Sonyaliz Goveo grabbed a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200-meter individual medley and the 400-meter freestyle.
Abigail Wood also claimed two second-place finishes in the 100-meter butterfly and the 100-meter backstroke. She missed out on two event wins by a combined 1.53 seconds.
The Braves are back in the pool Friday when they make the short drive to Laurinburg to do battle with St. Andrews and Warren Wilson. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the O'Herron Pool. UNCP lost twice to St. Andrews last season, but knocked off Warren Wilson 88-47 in the season's final meet a year ago.
