Swimming Reaches Double-Digit Wins, Eases Past St. Andrews And Warren Wilson

January 26, 2018

LAURINBURG – Looking for win number 10 in just its second ever season, the UNC Pembroke swimming team did one better by knocking off Warren Wilson and host St. Andrews for wins 10 and 11 on Friday evening at the O'Herron Pool in Laurinburg.

The victories snapped a three-dual losing skid for the Braves, who bested Warren Wilson 124-31 and raced past St. Andrews by a 112-43 score. UNCP won 8 of the 11 events on Friday and touched first or second in 10 races to improve to 11-5 this season.

If a pair of wins weren't enough for the Black & Gold in Laurinburg, the Braves also saw three school records fall and six new personal bests set. Two of the school standards were broken in winning fashion by freshman Megan Hunter, who blew past the previous 200-yard freestyle mark by over 10 seconds with a time of 2:07.73. The Chesterfield, Virginia native also set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:39.31, which was also more than 10 seconds better than the previous standard.

Freshman Victoria Brousseau toppled the previous UNCP record in the 100-yard breaststroke by just over a second in a time of 1:16.14 in a second-place effort. Freshman Mary Thorn set a trio of new personal bests on Friday in the 200-yard freestyle (2:42.78), 100-yard breaststroke (1:46.92) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.78).

UNCP's Abbey Wood finished first in all three of her events, including a dominant performance in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.09) that saw the freshman touch the wall over 10 seconds before the second-place finisher. Wood also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:23.88 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.59.

Karina Ramosbarbosa squeaked out a victory in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:05.82 to pick up valuable points for the Braves, while Sonyaliz Goveo bested the 200-yard individual medley field by over 32 seconds with a time of 2:39.98.

The Braves also finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay in the meet's first event.

UNCP will be back in the pool Feb. 3 in a dual meet against Pfeiffer. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Merner Pool in Misenheimer. The Falcons are 5-3-1 in their first season after a two-year hiatus from competition.
