Lander Downs Volleyball In Straight Sets

PEMBROKE – Freshman Brianna Warren registered six kills, a trio of digs and a season-best seven blocks and three players turned in double-digit kill totals to lead on the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to a straight-sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) victory over visiting Converse on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The victory snapped a two-match skid for the Braves (8-15) who matched their 2017 win total with the triumph as well. The Valkyries (5-20) fell to 0-5 all-time in the series with UNCP, including four losses via sweep.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 11-25 Lander hit .353 in the opening set and took advantage of eight hitting errors by the hosts to grab the early advantage. UNCP closed an early deficit to just one point, 6-5, on an attack error by the visitors, but the Bearcats responded by throwing together an 11-3 run to take control.
SET 2 I 16-25 The Braves committed eight hitting errors in the second set as well, and Lander hit better than .300 on the way to climbing into the driver's seat in the match. Ashley Caesar's kill brought the Black & Gold to within four points, 11-7, but the Bearcats responded again, this time with a 7-2 run to pad their advantage out to 18-9. The visitors scored six of the set's final 10 points to finish it out.
SET 3 I 20-25 A close set throughout, the Bearcats used a late run to seal the match. The Braves closed to within one point, 18-17, on a kill by Shannon Skryd, but Lander tacked up four-straight points to fuel the outcome. UNCP closed the gap to 24-20 on two-straight points, but a solo block by Imari Ashley capped the scoring on the night.
