Volleyball Tops Southern Wesleyan In Midweek Road Contest

CENTRAL, S.C. – Senior Aquia Jones logged a team-best 16 kills and the UNC Pembroke volleyball team used some early momentum to grab the first two sets on the way to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22) victory at Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday evening.

It was the sixth-straight non-conference victory for the Braves (9-14) who tacked up their ninth victory of the season – the most wins for the club since the 2014 campaign. The setback marked the third-straight loss for Southern Wesleyan (7-14) who fell to 1-1 all-time in the series with the Black & Gold.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-18 The Braves hit better than .360 in the opening set and committed just two attack errors to grab the early advantage. The Warriors tacked up three-straight points to trim their deficit back to 13-11, but UNCP strung together a 10-3 run to gain all of the momentum. Down 24-15, Southern Wesleyan rallied for three-straight points, but a service error by the hosts handed the opening set to the Braves.
SET 2 I 25-20 Southern Wesleyan led 12-11 after a ball-handling error by the Black & Gold, but UNCP responded with three-straight points and did not trail again. The Warriors knotted the score back up again thanks to a block from Olivia Johnson, but a kill by Bailee Jones moments later sparked UNCP on a 6-2 run that proved to be the difference.
SET 3 I 15-25 The Braves took their foot off the gas pedal in the third set, and Southern Wesleyan took advantage. UNCP trimmed an early deficit down to just one point, 7-6, on a Kaila Crowder kill, but the Warriors lit up the scoreboard with seven-straight points and got behind a train of momentum the rest of the way out.
SET 4 I 25-22 The Warriors led for much of the opening half of the fourth set, but the Braves put together a couple of key runs to fuel the match-clinching victory. Southern Wesleyan threatened to take a late lead by scoring two-straight points and evening things up at 19 apiece, but a service error by the hosts quelled the momentum and ignited the Braves on a 5-1 run that eventually put the visitors up 24-20. The Warriors threatened with a late rally, but Aquia Jones closed out the night with a kill.
