Volleyball Too Much For Mount Olive

October 9, 2018

Box Score PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit at nearly a .200 clip and matched a season-best with 10 blocks as the Braves capped off a perfect day of competition with a sweep (25-9, 25-20, 25-19) of Mount Olive on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the fourth-win in the last five outings for the Braves (7-12) who matched last season's victory total with the result as well. The setback snapped a two-match series win streak for the Trojans (4-14) who have yet to taste a victory against the Black & Gold in Pembroke.

GAME REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-9 The Braves surrendered the first point of the set, but it was all Black & Gold after that. UNCP led 12-4 after a kill from Brianna Warren, and then scored seven-straight points to go up 20-7. The Trojans dug into their deficit with points on back-to-back serves, but the Braves tacked up the final five points of the set and continued to build momentum.
SET 2 I 25-20 UNCP posted the first six points of the set and kept that distance for a majority of the way out. The Braves led 21-14 following a kill from Kaila Crowder, but Mount Olive began to creep back, scoring six of the next eight points to pull to within 23-20 late. Consecutive kills from Aquia Jones and Shannon Skryd would keep the Black & Gold in the driver's seat, however.
SET 3 I 25-19 The Braves hit just .051 and trailed for much of the third set, but used a late run to finish off the sweep of Mount Olive. The visitors led 17-15 after a kill from Andrea Rivera-Reyes late in the match, but an Aquia Jones kill moments later sparked the hosts on a run of four-straight points that gave them the lead for good. The Trojans scored a point coming out of a timeout to pull to within a lone point, 19-18, but UNCP tacked up six of the next seven points to close it out.
