Fayetteville State Uses Big Second Quarter To Push Past Women's Basketball

FAYETTEVILLE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot just 28.6 percent from the field, including a 2-for-10 clip in a decisive second quarter, as the Braves dropped a non-conference road outing to Fayetteville State, 54-41, on Tuesday evening at Felton J. Capel Arena.  

The result marked the third-straight loss for the Braves (1-3) who will play four of their next five outings on the road. The triumph snapped a three-game series losing streak for the Broncos (3-2) who improved to 2-0 at home in 2018-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Fayetteville State controlled the momentum in a back-and-forth first quarter. UNC Pembroke took a 9-8 lead on a layup by Danielle Heath just more than five minutes into the opening period. The Braves let the lead slide when Fayetteville State scored six of the last seven points of the quarter to go out in front, 14-10.
2ND QUARTER
Tee Graham provided the only offense in the second quarter for the Braves who managed just a 2-for-10 clip from the field. The Broncos went on a 7-0 run to close out the half and led the Braves 31-16 heading into intermission.
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run and cut its deficit to 33-28 on back to back 3-pointers from Melanie Horne.  Fayetteville State scored six of the next eight points to grab a nine-point lead, and eventually took a double-digit advantage into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
Se'Dasia Love hit two quick layups to pull the Black & Gold within six, 43-37, but Fayetteville State went on an 11-4 run to close out the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Melanie Horne led the team in scoring for the fourth time this season with 13 points, while also adding seven rebounds.
+ Avery Locklear and Se'Dasia Love both added nine points on the night.
NOTABLES
+ Tuesday's setback snapped a three-game series win streak for the Braves who still lead the overall series, 11-9.
+ Fayetteville State posted a 38-35 advantage in the rebounding column on Tuesday which marked the first time the Black & Gold has been out-rebounded this season.
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to UNC Greensboro (2-2) for an exhibition game in Fleming Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
