No. 21 Baseball Uses 5-Run Seventh Inning To Finish Off IUP

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team twice rallied back from multi-run deficits, and then used a 5-run seventh inning to take the lead for good as the Braves finished off a three-game sweep of Indiana (Pa.) with a 16-12 win over the Crimson Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week Trevor Clemons homered and drove in five runs to lead the Braves (6-0), while Luke Jackson (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Trey Jacobs both turned in multi-hit days at the plate. Ethan Baucom drove in three runs on a 1-for-3 hitting line for the hosts as well.

Ted DeSanti (3-for-5, 2 R) hit one of four home runs on the day for the Crimson Hawks (0-3) who kicked off a season-opening 14-game road trip against the Braves over the weekend. Nate Dickey (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Dan Sepic (2-for-5, R) both registered a pair of hits for the visitors.

Aaron Biggerstaff (1-0) struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the win in relief for the Black & Gold. Ben Hudock (0-1) recorded just one out in the seventh for IUP and took the loss after allowing three earned runs on a hit and a base on balls.

IUP scored five runs on as many hits in the top of the second to grab the early momentum, but UNCP used a 4-run third to knot things back up. The Crimson Hawks scored three more times in the fourth to take their second lead of the contest, but the Braves knotted the score back up with three of their own in the fifth, and then took the lead on Clemons's 3-run blast in the sixth.

IUP would not go away quietly, however, and evened things back up again on back-to-back one-out homers from Dickey and DeSanti in the seventh.

The Braves will open up Peach Belt Conference play next weekend when they welcome Augusta (0-6, 0-3 PBC) to Pembroke for a three-game series at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open the weekend with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday, and close out the series with single games on Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) as well.
