Second Half Run Helps Women’s Basketball Stymie USC Aiken

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team held visiting USC Aiken to a paltry 34.4 percent shooting effort and bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 23-7 run to pull away for good on the way to a 58-49 victory over the Pacers on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the second win in the last three outings for the Braves (9-14, 7-12 PBC) who took over sole possession of eighth place in the Peach Belt Conference standings with the result. USC Aiken (6-19, 3-16) has now dropped six of its last seven contests, and fell to 3-10 on the road with Wednesday's setback.

Nyla Allen scored a game-high 13 points and pulled down a trio of rebounds to pace the Black & Gold who held an opponent under 50 points for the first time this season. Alecia Hardy added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while also adding five boards. Melanie Horne came off the bench to turn in nine points and a team-best six rebounds.

Kyrie' Chandler tallied a team-best 11 points for the Pacers who shot just 36 percent (5-for-14) from the field in the third period. Star Toomey recorded five points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the visitors as well.

The Pacers trimmed a six-point halftime deficit down to just two on Marissa Bruce's jumper at the 4:24 mark in the third period, but a 3-pointer by Ebone Stevens on the other end of the court signaled the game-changing run that lasted nearly 10 minutes and saw the Black & Gold shoot 62 percent from the field, including a 6-for-9 success rate from the perimeter. The hosts led by as many as 18 points, 56-38, after Nyla Allen's jumper with 4-1/2 minutes remaining.

The teams combined to shoot just 30 percent on the way to 11 points apiece in the first quarter, but the Braves shot 50 percent in the second quarter and used a mild scoring spurt early on to eventually take a 29-23 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Morrow, Ga., to take on Clayton State (13-12, 10-9) in the front half of a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at The Loch.
