Hot-Handed Clayton State Upsets No. 18 Men’s Basketball

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State shot nearly 50 percent from the field and used a late first half run to provide itself the needed separation as the Lakers moved into a tie with the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team atop the Peach Belt Conference standings with an 83-73 victory over the Braves on Saturday.

The setback snapped a seven-game win streak for the Braves (21-5, 17-3 PBC), who also saw their eight-game win streak in the state of Georgia come to an end as well. It was the 10th-straight win for the Lakers (19-5, 17-3) who last tasted defeat on January 20 in Pembroke.

Nigel Grant turned in a team-best 21 points to lead the Braves, while Brandon Watts chipped in 17 second-half points in the loss as well. The Lakers got a game-high 22 points from Nathan Powell, who also pulled down nine rebounds as well.

The Braves trimmed an 11-point halftime deficit down to just five points, 66-61, on a layup from Grant with 4:20 left to play, but the Lakers answered with seven-straight points to go back out in front by double digits. Clayton State would eventually can 10-straight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the outcome.

Clayton State shot nearly 52 percent from the field scored 13 points off of just five turnovers by the Braves in the opening half, but was not able to separate itself from the Black & Gold until the final minutes of the period. A jumper by James Murray-Boyles at the 3:04 mark brought UNCP to within a bucket, but the Lakers closed out the half with an 11-4 run to take a 40-31 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Braves will close out the regular season portion of their 2017-18 schedule with a pair of home games next week. UNCP will battle Francis Marion (18-7, 13-7) in the second half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, while locking horns with Flagler (9-15, 6-14) on Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. Senior Day contest.
