No. 21 Baseball Tops Visiting Shepherd In Season Opener

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scored multiple runs in four different frames behind a solid start from right-hander Anthony Burke as the Braves improved to 17-1 in season openers under head coach Paul O'Neil with a 10-4 victory over defending Mountain East Conference champion Shepherd on Friday at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the 12th-straight season-opening win for the Braves (1-0) who lifted the lid on a season-opening 14-game home stand on Friday as well. It was the third-loss in the last four series matchups for the Rams (0-1) who dropped the bookends of a three-game set in Pembroke last season.

Ethan Baucom drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate to pace UNCP, while fellow preseason all-conference pick Roberto Rivera singled three times and scored a trio of runs on a 3-for-5 hitting line. Newcomer Trevor Clemons walked twice and scored three times on a 2-for-3 plate performance as well.

Justin Smith turned in a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate to pace the Rams, while Brenton Doyle doubled in a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 showing.

Burke (1-0) struck out four and scattered nine hits across six innings to on the way to extending his win streak out to seven-straight starts, while Hank Simpson worked the final nine outs to notch the three-inning save. Ryan Potts (0-1) surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits in six innings of work to saddle the loss for Shepherd. He also struck out six.

The Braves scored three times in the seventh to pad their advantage out to six runs, but Shepherd scratched the board for three runs of its own in the top of the eighth to get back into the game. The Braves put the game away in the bottom of the eighth, however, scoring three times on four free passes and a costly wild pitch to seal the outcome.

The squads will close out their weekend set with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
