No. 21 Baseball Routs Shepherd To Clinch Weekend Series

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team sent its entire batting order to the plate in a 5-run second inning and never looked back as the Braves clinched their weekend series with Shepherd on the shoulders of a 14-3 rout of the defending Mountain East Conference champions on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Seven different players recorded base hits for the Braves (2-0), including Ethan Baucom and Seth Hartings who both clubbed their first home run of the season as well in the offensive outburst as well. Six different players registered singles for the Rams (0-2), with Chase Hoffman producing the only RBI for the visitors.

Newcomer Jordan Toney (1-0) struck out five and scattered four hits over a productive five innings of work to pick up the win for the Black & Gold. Fairmont native Cole Lovin struck out six in just three innings of relief work as well, but was not awarded a decision. Justin Smith (0-1) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and as many walks in just four innings from the hill to take the loss for the Rams.

UNCP drew four walks and registered a pair of singles to key the big second inning, but the Braves tacked up at least one run in the next five innings as well to fuel the rout. Baucom hit a 2-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to give UNCP an 8-1 lead, and Hartings hit a grand slam in the sixth to pad the advantage out to 13-3.
