No. 21 Baseball Completes Season-Opening Sweep Of Shepherd

PEMBROKE – The offense registered season highs for both hits and runs, while the five-armed pitching staff combined to notch 15 strikeouts, as the 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team completed a season-opening sweep of defending Mountain East Conference Champion Shepherd with a 16-6 victory over the Rams on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (3-0) got base hits from 10 different players, while nine different players registered at least one RBI in the rout. Seth Hartings (2-for-4) and Trey Jacobs (2-for-6) both turned in a pair of hits, while Trevor Clemons scored four times on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Luke Jackson homered on a perfect 2-for-2 night at the plate for the Black & Gold as well.

Justin Smith (2-for-4) and Daniel Heleine (1-for-3) both hit homers to pace Shepherd (0-3) who scored all six of its runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Starter Blake Helms struck out six and surrendered just two hits in four innings of work for the Braves, but it was reliever Gunner Deal (1-0) who picked up the win in relief with five strikeouts in two innings from the mound. Adam Miller (0-1) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and seven walks in just 4-1/3 innings of work to saddle the loss for the visitors.

The Braves tacked up five hits and as many runs in the first inning alone to set the early tone, but had increased their advantage all the way out to 12-0 following a fielder's choice RBI by Kevon Perkins in the seventh. Smith hit a 3-run homer for Shepherd to spoil the shutout in the eighth, and Heleine hit a 2-run shot three batters later to nearly cut Shepherd's deficit in half.

UNCP will continue its season-opening 14-game home stand next weekend when it welcomes Indiana (Pa.) to Pembroke for a three-game set at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, before closing out the weekend with a noon first pitch on Sunday.
